Author Talk -- January 2005
I don’t even want to be here. The last thing that Kathleen McKensie wants to spend her summer doing is volunteering at the local hospital. She deals with illness on a daily basis at home, caring for her mother, who has multiple sclerosis. But Raina St. James has her heart set on being a Pink Angel --- and Raina wants her two best friends along with her.
Kathleen, Raina, and Holly Harrison have been best friends since sixth grade. Now, having just finished their sophomore year of high school, they’re closer than ever. And by being Pink Angels they'll be able to spend even more time together over the summer. To her surprise, Kathleen finds some unexpected pluses to being a Pink Angel. Not only does she actually enjoy the work she’s doing, she also meets fellow volunteer Carson Keifer, who has joined the program at the insistence of his parents, who are both doctors at the hospital.
Kathleen, burdened with responsibilities at home, is reluctant to get involved with Carson. Although he’s charming, intelligent and handsome --- and she’s definitely attracted to him --- he has a dubious reputation and a glamorous, spiteful ex-girlfriend who wants him back. But as the summer goes on, their flirtation grows into something more, and when a crisis happens Kathleen finds out that there’s more to Carson than meets the eye. By summer’s end, being a Pink Angel has changed Kathleen’s life in ways she never expected.
KATHLEEN'S STORY is the first title in Lurlene McDaniel’s "ANGELS IN PINK" trilogy, with one book devoted to each of the best friends. It’s inspirational without being over-the-top, entertaining while bringing in serious issues. By the time you finish reading the last page and wiping the tears from your eyes, you’ll be looking forward to finding out what happens in Raina’s Story, which is coming up next --- and sure to be another terrific tale about best friends, boyfriends, and being open to what life has to offer.
