Reading: A Bright Solution to Those Darkening Autumn Days

Autumn is in full swing here in the Northeast. The mornings are brisk but refreshing, and the amount of daylight wanes earlier with each passing evening. I wake up in the dark, and the sun is not shining in my office at 6:30AM like I have been enjoying the last few months; by 7PM it's really dark, making me feel a lot more tired than I should be. Remember the hour we lost for Daylight Savings Time last March? I am ready to get it back. Right now! But I have two more weeks to wait. I find myself snuggling in bed a few extra minutes each morning reading before I get myself going. Instead of just reading before bed, I am reading when I wake up. My book eases me into the darkness of morning.

Although I miss the summer, I’ve always found autumn to be a lovely transition season. As we begin pulling our fall jackets out of the closet, the trees outside shed their coats of green, showing off their rich hues of gold and red in what seems like a grand arboreal farewell to the summer. For those of you living in temperate areas of the country, the autumn foliage is a beautiful yet brief annual treat. While the falling temperatures and falling leaves draw many of us indoors, this month’s robust update is sure to provide inspiration and enjoyment.

For all of you book clubbers out there, we are thrilled to share with you SIX new discussion guides. Among them are JOHN 3:16 by Nancy Moser, a story about how a simple act of faith can change lives forever; UNTIL WE REACH HOME by Lynn Austin, a tale about finding love, faith and home; LONGINGS OF THE HEART, the second novel in Bonnie Leon’s Sydney Cove series; OUT OF HER HANDS by Megan DiMaria, a humorous novel about a mother searching for control in her hectic life; and A CUT ABOVE by Ginny Aiken, the third installment in the Shop-Til-U-Drop series. We are also featuring the discussion guide for MY SISTER DILLY by Maureen Lang, a story about the bond of sisterhood. This is one of our Word of Mouth titles this month along with WAITING FOR DAYBREAK by Kathryn Cushman.

Speaking of book clubs, if any of you live in or are visiting the San Jose area, I will be attending the third annual Book Group Expo, a book group event that is being held in San Jose on October 25th and 26th. Being that this will be my first time attending, I am really looking forward to the experience. If any of you plan to be there, please drop me a note since I would love to catch up with you.

Among our new featured titles this month are THE SHAPE OF MERCY by Susan Meissner, an inspirational tale of one young woman’s search for identity and meaning; ONE EXTRAORDINARY DAY by Harold Myra, a story in which a chance encounter with a mysterious stranger will change one man's life forever; A CONSTANT HEART by Siri Mitchell, a historical romance about a woman determined to win back the love of her soon-to-be husband; and RAIN SONG by Alice J. Wisler, a story about confronting the past and finding love. Visit the homepage to see all of this month’s new featured titles.

We have some great new reviews in our Faithful Fiction, Christian Living, and Marriage and Family Life sections, including CYNDERE’S MIDNIGHT: The Auralia Thread Series #2 by Jeffrey Overstreet, POPE JOHN PAUL II: An Intimate Life - The Pope I Knew So Well by Caroline Pigozzi and JUST HOW MARRIED DO YOU WANT TO BE?: Practicing Oneness in Marriage by Jim and Sarah Sumner.

We encourage you to take a moment to answer this month’s poll, which continues to ask whether or not your local newspaper publishes book reviews, while our question concerns books that you were compelled to buy after reading a great review. We look forward to seeing your responses.

This month’s wonderful selection of titles is sure to bring some light to those darkening autumn days. Here’s to a happy and healthy autumn --- with Halloween right around the corner, I am reminded that Thanksgiving and Christmas are not too far behind!

CYNDERE’S MIDNIGHT: The Auralia Thread Series #2 by Jeffrey Overstreet (Fantasy)
In the Blue Strand sequel to AURALIA’S COLORS and second installment in The Auralia Thread series, Jeffrey Overstreet again paints a compelling, otherworldly fantasy novel full of bizarre flora and fauna. New characters are introduced, and some old favorites make an appearance. Will they find hope amid despair and treachery as the beastmen mount their attacks? Reviewed by Cindy Crosby.

ISOLATION by Travis Thrasher (Horror/Suspense)
Travis Thrasher has proven that his writing talents extend to spooky tales as artfully as they do to suspense, adventure and drama. But ISOLATION is far more than a scary story. It is a fictional account of a very real challenge in our world: spiritual warfare. Not merely good versus evil, but the Good verses the Evil. It is the ultimate example of what can happen when Christians let down their guard or allow a hole to open up in their armor. Reviewed by Susan Miura.

BON APPÉTIT by Sandra Byrd (Fiction)
BON APPÉTIT, the second installment in Sandra Byrd’s French Twist series, is an entertaining sequel to LET THEM EAT CAKE. As the novel opens, Lexi Stuart has left Seattle to pursue her dream of learning to be a pastry chef in France. Loneliness, a pastry-sabotaging classmate, an exacting instructor at school, scrumptious food descriptions and multiple love interests will keep you glued to Lexi’s story. Reviewed by Cindy Crosby.

HOME ANOTHER WAY by Christa Parrish
(Fiction)
Bitter and angry divorcee Sarah Graham comes to the hardscrabble mountain town of Jonah, New York, to claim her inheritance. Although her estranged father was convicted of murdering her mother when she was a baby, his memory is oddly revered by the townspeople. What Sarah discovers in Jonah is far more valuable than money. POPE JOHN PAUL II: An Intimate Life - The Pope I Knew So Well by Caroline Pigozzi (Memoir)
Caroline Pigozzi, international reporter for Paris Match magazine, was allowed unprecedented access to Pope John Paul II --- and it shows in this remarkable account of Karol Wojtyla's 1978 ascendancy from archbishop of Krakow to become the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, a position he held until his death in 2005. Pigozzi offers readers a detailed look at the daily life of the pope, which few people ever see. Reviewed by Marcia Ford.

INVITATION: Billy Graham and the Lives He Touched
by Basyle and
Aram Tchividjian (Biography)
Here is the inspiring spiritual journey of hearts and souls encountering God through the ministry of Billy Graham. From despair to hope, from broken life to renewed spirit, INVITATION --- created by Graham’s grandsons, Basyle and Aram Tchividjiantells --- tells each individual story within the visual context of the Crusade experience. Reviewed by Marcia Ford.

CHURCHED: One Kid's Journey Toward God Despite a Holy Mess by Matthew Paul Turner (Memoir)
In this first-hand account, author Matthew Paul Turner shares amusing --- sometimes cringe-worthy --- and poignant stories about growing up in a fundamentalist household, where even well-intentioned contemporary Christian music was proclaimed to be “of the devil.” Reviewed by Marcia Ford.

FAITH & DOUBT by John Ortberg (Christian Life/Spiritual Growth)
We often think of doubt as the opposite of faith, but could it actually strengthen our relationship with God? According to John Ortberg, bestselling author and pastor, the very nature of faith requires the presence of uncertainty. In FAITH & DOUBT, he traces the line between belief and unbelief: less a dividing line between hostile camps than a razor’s edge that runs through every soul. Reviewed by Michele Howe.

DEATH BY LOVE: Letters from the Cross by Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears (Theology/Practical Life)
While many books debate the finer points of the doctrine of the atonement, what is often lost are the real-life implications of Jesus’ death on the cross for those who have sinned and have been sinned against. Written in the form of pastoral letters, DEATH BY LOVE outlines the 12 primary effects of Jesus’ death on the cross and connects each to the life of a different individual. Reviewed by Michele Howe.

HEAVEN HAS BLUE CARPET: A Sheep Story by a Suburban Housewife by Sharon Niedzinski (Christian Life/Inspirational)
Suburban-housewife-turned-shepherdess Sharon Niedzinski shares warm and woolly stories about her life with sheep and the spiritual lessons she learned along the way.  Plenty of scripture makes this a good devotional pick, and entertaining sagas of life among the lambs will endear it to those who like true accounts that offer Christian truths. Reviewed by Cindy Crosby.

JESUS LAUGHED: The Redemptive Power of Humor by Robert Darden (Christian Life)
In JESUS LAUGHED, Robert Darden --- senior editor of The Wittenburg Door, the world’s oldest, largest and pretty much only religious satire magazine --- draws on his years of experience deflating religious pomposity and making the faithful laugh to show why humor is so central to the faith, and how to make it a big part of your daily walk with God.
