And Another School Year Begins....

I am writing this opener from the Outer Banks in North Carolina where my family and I are celebrating our annual end-of-the-summer getaway. As September approaches, I find myself wondering where the summer went. I am in back-to-school mode as my older son Greg is leaving for his first year at college. Although he will be close by (Fordham’s Manhattan campus is about four blocks away from our office), I confess that I will miss having him around all the time.

My younger son Cory is off to his last year in middle school. Between the two of them, I have clocked just a few hours shopping for school supplies and paraphernalia for Greg's dorm room. As you can imagine, I was very much looking forward to devoting some time for reading as well as R&R this week. I also am using this week away as an opportunity to brainstorm ways in which we can make our websites even more exciting, thinking that I ALWAYS do better outside of the office.

As I mentioned last month, we are planning for outreach to Christian women's ministry groups and organizations with book club selections with a program where readers would register their groups to become eligible to win books and phone chats with authors. If any of you belong to one of these groups, or attend events that target Christian women, may I ask you to drop me a note at Carol@bookreporter.com? I would love to explore my ideas further with our readers as I flesh them out. And thanks to those of you who have responded. I appreciate your feedback, and we WILL be tapping you more going forward.

August's update is quite robust. We have new study guides available for DOGWOOD by Chris Fabry, which is also one of our Word of Mouth titles this month; THE OUTSIDER by Ann H. Gabhart, an historical romance about forbidden love; and UNCHRISTIAN AMERICA by Michael Babcock, an historical analysis of Christianity in the United States.

Among our other featured titles are
LIFE IS A GIFT: Inspiration from the Soon Departed by Bob and Judy Fisher, an encouraging book about faith, hope and love; UNBRIDLED DREAMS by Stephanie Grace Whitson, an historical romance about spiritual growth and coming of age; and THE JEWEL OF GRESHAM GREEN by Lawana Blackwell, which is our other Word of Mouth title this month.

We are pleased to share Marcia Ford’s review of the bestselling THE SHACK by William P. Young, a critically acclaimed story of an anguished father trying to make sense of a moment in time that changed so many lives forever. Among our other new Faithful Fiction, Christian Living, and Marriage and Family Life reviews are BROKEN ANGEL by Sigmund Brouwer, WILD GOOSE CHASE: Reclaim the Adventure of Pursuing God by Mark Batterson and TRADING PLACES: The Best Move You'll Ever Make in Your Marriage by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott.

Please take a moment to respond to this month’s poll and question, which continues to ask you about the social networking sites you belong to and whether or not you would be interested in viewing the virtual libraries of other FaithfulReader.com readers. I look forward to seeing your responses, which will help us continue to develop our outreach project in the coming months.

Just a reminder that September is Library Card Sign-up Month. Created by the American Library Association, this is a time to remind adults and kids of the enriching resources our libraries offer. Celebrate with your friends and family by visiting your local library.

As we near Labor Day, I am always amazed at how the summer flies by. This one was quite a blur since I had so much business travel packed into the past few months. With that in mind, I plan to maximize the remaining time I have to read outside before the long and warm days wane and the autumn chill blows in. Here’s to a safe and healthy back-to-school season and to finishing your summer with some great reading.

WILD GOOSE CHASE: Reclaim the Adventure of Pursuing God by Mark Batterson (Christian Living)
Mark Batterson calls believers from the ho-hum of daily life to chase the wild goose and respond to the leading of the Holy Spirit in their lives. He explains that Celtic Christians had a name for the Holy Spirit: "An Geadh-Glas," or "the Wild Goose." Much like a wild goose, the Spirit of God can't be tracked or tamed, but following Him will lead you on paths and adventures that you never knew existed. Reviewed by Margaret Oines.

CULTURE MAKING: Recovering Our Creative Calling by Andy Crouch (Christian Life/Social Issues)
