Bodie and Brock Thoene
Brock and Bodie Thoene (pronounced Tay-nee), who worked with John Wayne on movie scripts in their early years, have written over 40 novels. That these bestsellers have sold more than ten million copies and won eight ECPA Gold Medallion Awards affirm what millions of readers have already discovered--that the Thoenes are not only master stylists of historical fiction, but experts at capturing readers' minds and hearts. From their two classic series about Israel--Zion Chronicles and Zion Covenant--and THE TWILIGHT OF COURAGE to tales of the West, The Saga of the Sierras and The Wayward Winds, to The Shiloh Legacy series and SHILOH AUTUMN, poignant stories about the American depression, to the dramatic portrayal of the Irish 1840s famine in The Galway Chronicles to their most Zion Legacy series, the Thoenes have made their mark in modern history. Now, with The A.D. Chronicles series, they step seamlessly into the world of Yerushalyim and Rome, in the days when Yeshua walked the earth.
The Thoenes have four grown children, Rachel, Jake, Luke, Ellie, and five grandchildren. They spend part of their year in London, England, and the remainder in California and Nevada.
Jesus has a way of turning worldly wisdom on its head. The rich are poor, the poor are rich. The strong are weak, the weak are strong. And, sometimes, the blind can see, while those with perfect vision miss the miracle happening right before their eyes. Brock and Bodie Thoene invite you to take a fresh look at Jesus through the eyes of his contemporaries. Read what the Thoenes have to say about FIRST LIGHT, their most recent release from Tyndale.
FIRST LIGHT is set in the time of Jesus and involves characters who personally encounter the Lord. The people of ancient Galilee and Judea, no matter how briefly mentioned in scripture, were real folks. They had families. They had problems and concerns. They had hopes, fears, and dreams. The AD CHRONICLES portray these characters' lives before and after their momentary meetings with the Lord.
In FIRST LIGHT, we tell the story of Peniel, the man born blind whose healing is recorded in the Bible. This story is fascinating, because it is such a beautiful miracle and demonstrates the healing love of Jesus. And yet so much controversy swirls around the man once he is healed!
FIRST LIGHT raises the issue of what constitutes true blindness. Is it a physical condition? Or is it a condition of the heart? Here's a man born blind physically, whose sight has been restored by Jesus. Religious leaders call the formerly blind man and his parents into question, overlooking the fact that this enormous miracle just took place, all because of their opposition to Jesus. So what is true blindness? What is physical blindness compared to those who witness the healing touch of Jesus and miss the point altogether?
That is the question FIRST LIGHT is all about: Who is really blind?
As Peniel sat begging inside the temple, he listened to the stories and the rabbinical discussions swirling around him. He learned so much that, after his healing, he was able to argue the case for Jesus before the council--educated men who considered themselves far more "sighted" and insightful than Peniel. But Peniel was unafraid to stand up and say, "I was blind, but now I see." This is truly amazing grace. Peniel, of course, reveals that in his heart he was not blind. Ironically, he was the one who saw the truth. And in the end, he's the one that Jesus sought out, saying, "Come with me."
We'd like to share with you a very interesting letter we received from a Jewish woman in New York. She is blind, and someone gave her some of our books on tape. The woman wrote, "I want to tell you I heard the audio books and they changed my life. I will never be the same." She wrote about how it opened the eyes of her heart to hear about Jesus on tape.
We are excited that FIRST LIGHT is getting into the hands of people who need to hear the message that Jesus is the answer. No one has dug a hole so deep, or built a wall so high, that Jesus cannot reach down or over and say, "Come here, friend. Let me show you what forgiveness and love really feel like." No matter what you've done, or who you've been, or how far from God you think you are--there is hope for you, and forgiveness, and acceptance. That means there's hope for everyone.
Writing the AD CHRONICLES is a most amazing experience. We have felt the literal presence of the Lord. More than anything else, we want people to see the face of Jesus.
May you, and your family, especially at this blessed season of the year, experience the special peace and joy that comes from seeing Jesus face-to-face.
